A Darkness

A darkness wrapped around our hearts.

We breathed deep in anticipation of the dawn, for the night has overwhelmed us.

"Hold fast. The light will come," they say.

But I have seen ships battered on rocks and their crew beg for death in nights like these.

"Hold fast. The light will come," they say.

The dawn whispers peacefully in our ears and our sails flutter.

"THE WIND! MY CAPTAIN!"

You rise in the east, O blinding light.
You fill our hearts with hope.

Our vessel creaks with the movement.
Taught sails carry us homeward.
Eyes clear from sleep and hearts are renewed.

"The light has come. Hold fast," they say.
"The light has come. Hold fast."
